Description

I started Daily Zen in 2008 to share quotes pertaining to my meditation practice and self-directed studies of Eastern philosophy. Twitter had just started and it seemed like a clever outlet for the aphoristic wisdom I found in various spiritual texts. I didn’t expect the project to have an audience of nearly 300,000 after just a few years! I regularly get emails from people who say that my writings have encouraged them through difficult times or changed their perspective on something. This is a great gift. I do not claim to be a Zen master or ‘enlightened’ by any means. I believe enlightenment is found in each moment we spend in meditation. The community that’s developed around Daily Zen has helped me grow and recognize the universality of this mindset. I consider myself the student here. We all want guidance. When we communicate and listen closely, we find it. Since 2008, I have written thousands of pages, read countless spiritual texts, and maintained my daily meditation practice. The goal of these writings is simply to share my reflections with others. I hope you find something useful in these short essays and that they help you commit further to your meditation practice. If you don’t meditate yet, I hope they encourage you to start. Remember— the good life is as simple as paying attention.

The temptation to write "Can't recommend this book enough" is big. But on second thought, that wouldn't make any justice to this item, as those type of statements may end up sounding somehow vague and over-generic.So, I'd rather point two things I really liked the most about this book:1) It's really easy to read, as Charlie writes using a simple and clear - yet grammatically beautiful and engaging - level of language that articulates all ideas presented here in a very friendly manner. Feels almost like you're sitting down for coffee with a friend to chat a bit, and in the process he's dropping casually some nice tips of advise and life wisdom.2) I also love how all the book is structured in short and brief snippets of text (yes, ADD-generation, I'm talking to all of us). Which means, you can of course read it all in a strict lineal manner, from beginning to end. But you can also read it backwards if you want. Or jump in and out between different places of the book, or back and forth, and so on. It's like a theme park of spiritual-themed ideas, and you're free to ride each attraction in any order, and of course, repeat those you like more as many times as you want. The reflex to randomly revisit its different passages several times becomes almost unavoidable.Bottom line, you may be new to spirituality, or going through a period of feeling a bit disoriented emotionally, or simply wanting to approach for the first time some notions of ancient Eastern philosophy teachings. But you also may not have a clue of where to start, or intimidated by the infinite literature available out there, or how complex or difficult to absorb some of it can be. Then, this Daily Zen compilation is certainly one of the best starting points you will find.Consider Charlie as your ultimate "curator" of Zen wisdom, doing all the hard work and selective digging for you; and then presenting it all in a way that's very enjoyable to read and assimilate.Go for it, give it a try, and I can assure you will walk away with plenty of new food for thought for your wandering mind.
