I've been reading about Zen, Buddhism and other eastern religions for most of my lifetime, and I can say that this small book is by far the best source I've found that points directly to what the Zen "process" is all about. It's a rare opportunity to get a sense of what it's like to be able to listen to a real Zen master. What you might take away from this gem is the fact that Zen is not about learning a philosophy, and it's not even about attaining some form of "enlightenment," but rather a prescription for living your life to the fullest - in the here and now - because there really is no other place to be. Zen figured out long ago how to maintain (as good as possible) a state of what we now refer to as mindfulness. Here's a tip - The practice itself is the goal. Sounds simple, but it's quite difficult to do in our fast paced, information-based world. The trick is to keep coming back to yourself, through practice, and not letting the mind run the show. I will always return to this personal and practical book whenever I need to refresh my focus and "right understanding." Don't forget to get the other books on Zuzuki's talks: "Not Always So," and "Branching Streams Flow in the Darkness." They're like having a Zen master at your beckon call.
