Description

Brought up within a Zen Buddhist tradition and later becoming a Jesuit priest, the author shows how Zen enriched his understanding of the Bible, and how Christianity gave substance to his practice of Zen. Original.

There are many very good books on Zen and Christianity (by Reuben Habito, Robert Kennedy, William Johnston, Aelred Graham, etc). This one may not be as ‘comprehensive’ in coverage, in that it describes and draws on the actual experience of a person, and presupposes prior knowledge of both Zen and the Bible. However, it is extremely profound and balanced in its insights, and is a testimony of how transformative Zen practice has been to the faith of this Jesuit priest. Originally written in Japanese, the style sometimes reflects the author’s culture. However, the excellent translation makes things very clear. I keep it by my bedside for occasional consultation. As with most books on Zen and Christianity, it is not for those bent on dogmas and doctrines.
