Description

This accessible introduction to the philosophy and practice of Zen Buddhism includes a program of study that encompasses practically every aspect of life. The American Zen teacher John Daido Loori shows us that Zen practice should include not only meditation, the study of Zen literature and liturgy, and moral and ethical action, but should also manifest in work, artistic, and everyday activities. The Eight Gates are:    1.  Zazen, a type of meditation described as "sitting Zen"    2.  Face-to-face meetings between teacher and student    3.  Academic study of the sutras related to Zen training, other schools of Buddhism, Buddhist history, psychology, and philosophy    4.  Zen rites and rituals and their meaning    5.  The moral and ethical requirements set in the Buddhist Precepts    6.  Art practice as an extension of Zen practice    7.  Body practice as an extension of Zen practice    8.  Work as an active function of zazenBeautifully illustrated with Loori's own photographs, this edition also includes a new introduction and an updated reading list.

This is an amazing book. I originally bought it in 2009, but only now do I realize the completeness of John Daido Loori's insights.Loori and others at Zen Mountain Monastery have created a program that includes 8 gates: Zazen, Face-to-Face meetings between teacher and student, Zen rights and rituals, Moral and ethical requirements, Art practice, Body practice, and Work.In other words, Zen Mountain Monastery created a complete program and did not just pick and choose aspects of Zen training that suited them and abandon the rest.If just reading a book could bring the reader to realization, this book would do it. But as Loori writes:"It is only the experience itself is transformative. To understand it or to believe it doesn't impart any lasting strength -- but to realize it, to make it real for yourself can transform your life."John Daido Loori has created a very important book. His many years of practice shows in every page.Loori's book is not just thought provoking, it is practice provoking.
